What it means to give 100 percent

Give 100 percent, we have heard it many times, on the ground, in the school at home. Our webinar A Football Pro's Journey guest speaker Mr. Dinesh Nair too shared that he reached the top flight of Indian football even though he entered late in the world of football because he gave his 100%. Isn't it worth knowing what does it really mean to give 100%?

Life around us keeps changing, some days you would want to curl up a little more in your bed after a tiring day; it may feel like it takes everything you have just to get out of the bed and show up on the field. Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone to show up is 100% effort. It is how hard you tried to make it happen, the extra effort to make it happen.

Giving it your all also depends on your choices, priorities, and circumstances. What’s your priority, watching the late-night match or waking up fresh and rested to give your extra effort on the field? Our guest shared a very insightful anecdote about the India team captain to drive his point. Sunil Chetri is still firing on all cylinders, scoring goals with impunity, and wants to do so for many years to come. If you want to succeed like him, just don’t see what he is doing on the field today, but what he has been doing off the field, the decisions he has taken over the years because he chose football.

The other two mantras of success he shared were “having faith in yourself” and a “don’t give up approach.” All three mantra relates to success in our daily life endeavors too, no wonder football teaches life skills like no other. At Rush, a strong impetus is laid on the core values for inculcating life-enriching skills, which becomes the foundation for not just succeeding but also appreciating it.

Our accomplished guest who is also a professional educator and an administrator shared interesting insights on the changing nature of the game and evolution in Indian football. The aspiring goalkeeper and coaches were for a treat; Mr. Dinesh explained the reason behind the emergence of the Goalkeeper from the shadows of the goalpost to the forefront of the game. “Goalkeepers make the best captains due to the fact that they have the best view of the whole field, can map out strategies, marshal the entire team and direct the game which more teams prefer to start from the back.” Names like legendary Gigi Bufon, the best goalkeeper the world Manuel Neuer, and our very own AIFF player of the year Gurpreet Sandhu have redefined the role of the goalkeeper to the first attacker and the last defender.

On the administration front from founding the AIFC along with IM Vijayan for developing better coaches with knowledge exchange from peer football nations to doing a yeoman service during the pandemic, he has done it all. He has accomplished a lot because he makes a choice and applies the three mantras of success. So there you go, it’s time for you to make your choice and give it your 100%.
